Crystal Springs Recreation Area
723 Pump Hollow RD Wytheville, VA 24382
Hours – Dawn to Dusk unless reserved
South of Wytheville, just outside of the town limits, Crystal Springs Recreation Area consists of 1800 acres of property owned by the Town of Wytheville. The land was preserved as a watershed for the Town, and the remnants of an old reservoir remain and serve as a home to various types of aquatic life. The recreation area is ideal for picnics, camping, hiking and biking. Camping spaces are limited. Campers can check availability by calling the Recreation Center at 276-223-3378, but campers must come to the Recreation Center in person to reserve a camping space.
The Town of Wytheville partnered with the Wythe-Bland Community Foundation and the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation TrackTRAILS to design and develop the land for recreation purposes so the entire community could benefit from the endless recreation possibilities. You will now find three completed trails, two loop and one connecter trail. Depending on the trail you choose you could find yourself traversing over ridge tops, that provide excellent views of Sand Mountain in the fall, to the reservoir or a short easy walk along the creek to relax after a long day at work. Three picnic areas are scattered along the trail for everyone's enjoyment as well as two pit-toilets. A Terrian Park has been added to the Crystal Springs Recreation Area and includes features like launch ramps, balance beams, domes and rain drops as well as more advanced aspects like a teeter-toter, rock drops and gardens and ramp walls. The design makes a minimal impact on the environment by using natural features like boulders and inclines.
The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation´s TrackTRAIL program has helped make the trails interactive and fun learning environment for kids and their families. Interpretive signs along the trail provide opportunities for visitors to learn about birds that are common to the area and about the aquatic life. Located next to these signs are boxes that contain observation equipment and identification guides that allow families to explore and discover things on their own. At the trailhead there are four different self-guided brochures that can be used along the trails as well. After utilizing the brochures visitors can log on to the Kids in Parks website, register and answer a few questions about their visit to the trail and receive neat prizes!
