Richard R. Showalter Jr.
Director

The Parks and Recreation Director is Rick Showalter. He was employed by the Town of Wytheville in 2000. Rick worked for Roanoke County Parks and Recreation and Tourism Department for 17 years prior to his employment with Wytheville. He is a graduate from Radford University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation Administration. He currently is a member of Virginia Recreation and Parks Society and North Carolina Recreation and Parks Society where he stays abreast of current trends and standards in the recreation industry.

Responsibilities
Parks and Recreation is responsible for all indoor and outdoor recreation activities, program, leagues and special events. Rick supervises Aquatics, Athletics, Community Programs, Fitness, Youth/Teen Center and Climbing Wall. In addition to the normal duties of a recreation department, he is fortunate to supervise the operations of the recreation portion of the Wytheville Community Center. This 70,900 square foot, state of the art facility has an indoor pool plaza, 4,000 square foot fitness center, one-eighth of a mile track, youth/teen center, two basketball full-courts, two racquetball courts and a 55 foot wide by 33 foot high unique climbing wall.

Crystal Hylton
Services Coordinator

Crystal has been employed with the Town of Wytheville since October 2001. She currently serves as the Services Coordinator and Administrative Assistant. Crystal's responsibilities include supervision of front desk staff and all daily operations, overseeing customer service, maintaining department software system, processing accounts receivable, marketing and serving as the administrative assistant. Crystal received an Associate Degree in Paralegal Administrative Services from New River Community College in 2001.

Kenny Sayers
Athletic Coordinator

Kenny started working for The Town Of Wytheville Parks and Recreation Department in June of 1975. He is a native of Wytheville and graduated from George Wythe High School and attended one year at Wytheville Community College. Kenny serves as The Athletic Coordinator for youth and adult sports programs for The Wytheville Parks and Recreation Department.

Joshua N. Neal
Aquatics Coordinator

Joshua started working part-time with the Town of Wytheville Parks and Recreation department in March of 2007 as a lifeguard. He then shortly moved to assistant recreation supervisor where he worked not only in the pool, but in the fitness department, rock wall/teen center, and front desk. Joshua has also served as a water aerobics instructor, fit for life aerobics instructor, Kidventure summer camp director, basketball and soccer official, and also have assisted with many special events in the Community Center and Withers Park.

A graduate from Rocky Gap High School, Joshua continued his education at Wytheville Community College where he received an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration in 2007. He then transferred to Radford University to major in Recreation. After completing his internship with Roanoke County Parks, Recreation, and Tourism, he graduated with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Management in May of 2009. Joshua currently holds these certifications: Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO), Certified Pool and Spa Operator (CPO), Lifeguard Instructor (LGI), Lifeguarding First Aid CPR and AED for the Professional Rescuer, Aquatic Fitness Instructor, Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Outdoor Leader, and a Leave No Trace Trainer. He has been the Aquatics Coordinator since June of 2009.

Dustin Akers
Aquatics Supervisor / Swim Team Coach

Dustin is currently the Aquatics Supervisor and Swim Team Coach. He has 12 years experience within competitive swimming as a swimmer and a coach. He also has 8 years experience in aquatics starting as a lifeguard and supervisor. He is a Virginia High School League (VHSL) certified coach and official. He has certification as a Certified Pool and Spa Operator (CPO), an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI), Lifeguard Instructor (LGI), and also a certified Lifeguard.

Ray Bradshaw
Facility Coordinator

Ray has worked for the Parks and Recreation for 18 years. He served two years as youth sports coordinator and 15 years as aquatics coordinator. Presently Ray is the Facility/Athletic Coordinator and helps with facility events and youth and adults sports.

Patti Mills
Fitness Coordinator

Patti Mills was hired as the full-time Fitness Coordinator for the Town of Wytheville's Community Center in December 2006. Patti worked as a part-time fitness instructor for the Town Parks and Recreation since 2004. Patti has 18 years of fitness, coordinating and management experience. Patti obtained her Associate Degree in Business Administration from WCC in 1990 and is pursuing her Bachelor's Degree from WCC/Old Dominion. She obtained a Group Exercise Instructor Certification in 1991, Personal Trainer Certification in 1998, Basic Water Rescue and Water Instructor Certification in 2007. Patti has attended and completed continuing education workshops for mat science, nutrition fundamentals, stress management, prenatal fitness, pilates and yoga, kickboxing, step aerobics, tai chi, senior fitness and youth fitness. Patti is certified in AED, First Aid and CPR. Patti currently oversees the Fitness Department at the Wytheville Community Center and is responsible for implementing fitness programs, budgeting, management of staff and teaching fitness classes such as step aerobics, step interval, pilates/yoga, functional fitness, basic cardio, intense cardio, yoga flow, aquamix (shallow water), deep water, strengthen and conditioning, and yoqua (yoga in therapy pool).

Melanie Halsey
Recreation Supervisor - Fitness Department

Melanie was hired as Assistant Recreation Supervisor for the Fitness Department at the Wytheville Community Center in February 2007. Her various duties include developing and planning, instructing and implementing all fitness and aquatic classes. She works together with the Fitness Coordinator to supervise the fitness area, walking track, and racquetball courts as well as all part time fitness staff. She is a native of Wytheville and a graduate of George Wythe High School. She graduated Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Human, Nutrition, Foods and Exercise. She is an Aerobics and Fitness of Association of America (AFAA) certified fitness instructor and personal trainer with 10+ years of experience of teaching group exercise classes as well as dance and gymnastics. She also holds certifications in water aerobics and yoga. Melanie has worked with a variety of organizations conducting physical and educational workshops to promote healthier lifestyles.

Todd Wolford
Program Coordinator

Hello my name is Jason Todd Wolford, I have been an employee of the Town of Wytheville Parks and Recreation Department since December 2006. I was hired on as an Assistant Recreation Supervisor of the Climbing Wall, Youth Teen Center and Fitness. I was later promoted to the Community Program Coordinator position. My duties include budgeting, planning, staffing and coordinating all programs that go on in the climbing wall and Youth Teen Center. I am also in charge of adult and senior programs/events that go on in and out of the facility. I also oversee Special Events such and the annual Summer Concert Series and all other events that involve youth,teens, seniors and adults.

I am a graduate of George Wythe High School and a 2005 Graduate of Radford University with a major in Exercise Sport and Health Education, and a minor in commercial fitness and sports medicine. I was big into sports all through High school and continued my athletic career on the Radford University Track and Field team. I am a current member of the Virginia Recreation and Park Society Inc. I am also a double certified personal trainer and continue to help local athletes understand weightlifting concepts and exercise methods. In my spare time, I like to workout, coach football and basketball. I have a passion for the outdoors and leading a healthy lifestyle.

Deana Blevins
Recreation Supervisor

Deana was hired as Recreation Supervisor for the Climbing Wall and Teen Center in September 2009. Her various duties include administrative, supervisory and professional work in the operation, maintenance of specialty equipment and in the creation and coordinating of various programs in the gymnasium, youth/teen center, and climbing wall. Trains or leads participants in the activity or equipment use.

Deana graduated from Mt. Rogers Combined School in 2003 and attended Western Carolina University where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Parks and Recreation Management with a concentration in Recreation Resource Management. She currently holds the following certifications: CPR/AED, Emergency Medical Technician, Outdoor Emergency Care Technician, Search and Rescue – Field Team Leader, and CPO. Prior to coming to Wytheville Deana worked 7 years at Grayson Highlands State Park as the 1500 hour Park Naturalist. She is passionate about helping people and gets great reward when helping others discover new activities that enable them to enjoy being out of doors, especially the youth. In her spare time she enjoys backpacking, canoeing, photography, and discovering new places

Suzette Jessie
Front Desk

Suzette has been an employee of the Town of Wytheville since February, 2007. She works in the Community Center as the Front Desk Assistant/Receptionist. Her responsibilities include greeting the customers, answering phones, registering participants for pass plans and programs, completing facility reservations, completing daily accounting processes and opening/closing the facility. She moved to Virginia in 2005 from Michigan.

Meagen Wright
Front Desk

Meagen has been an employee of the Town of Wytheville since July 2009. She works in the Community Center as the Front Desk Assistant/Receptionist. Her responsibilities include greeting the customers, answering phones, registering participants for pass plans and programs, completing facility reservations, completing daily accounting processes and opening/closing the facility.
